⋆✮ Shravan Mas  Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Katha ⋆✮

Enjoying the significance of Ekadashi’s, the archer Arjun said– “O Lord! There is no limit to my joy after hearing these auspicious and highly virtuous stories and my curiosity is increasing. O Kamalnayan! Now please tell me the story of Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha of Shravan month. What is the name of this Ekadashi and what is the rule of its fast? Which deity is worshipped in this and what is the fruit obtained by observing its fast?”

Shri Krishna said- “O archer! Just by listening to the story of Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month, one gets the fruits of infinite yagyas. O Parth! At the beginning of Dwapar Yuga, there was a city named Mahishmati. A king named Mahajit ruled in that city. He was childless, so he was always sad. He found all the comforts and luxuries of that kingdom very painful, because without a son, a man does not get happiness in this world or the other.

The king tried many ways to get a son, but all his efforts were futile. As King Mahajit was moving towards old age, his worries were also increasing.

One day the king addressed his court and said – ‘Neither have I committed any sin in my life, nor have I collected money from the people unjustly, nor have I ever troubled the people, nor have I ever disrespected the gods and Brahmins.

I have always treated people with respect for my son. I have always followed the king’s rules in a proper manner, never felt jealous of anyone, I consider everyone equal. The laws in my kingdom are not such that they create unnecessary fear in the subjects. Despite ruling the kingdom righteously, I am suffering a lot now, what is the reason for this? I am unable to understand anything. Please think about the reason for this and whether I will be able to get rid of this suffering in this life?

To get rid of this suffering of the king, the ministers etc. went to the forest, so that they could go there and tell the king’s suffering to some sage and find some solution. Going to the forest, they met the great sages and saints.

The elderly and knowledgeable sage Lomash also lived in that forest. All of them went to Maharishi Lomash. They all bowed down to Maharishi Lomash and sat in front of him. Everyone was very happy to see the Maharishi and everyone prayed to Maharishi Lomash – ‘O God! We are very fortunate that we got the opportunity to see you.’

Hearing the minister’s words, sage Lomash said – ‘O Minister! I am very pleased with your politeness and good behavior. Please tell me the purpose of your visit. I will do your work according to my ability, because my body is made for charity.

Hearing such soft words of sage Lomash, the minister said – ‘O Rishi! You are more capable than Brahma in knowing all our things, so please remove our doubts. Our king Mahajit of the city named Mahishmati is very religious and loves his subjects. He takes care of his subjects according to the religion like a son, but still, he is childless. O great sage! Due to this he is very sad. We are his subjects. We are also saddened by his sorrow, because it is the duty of the subjects to feel happy in the happiness of the king and sad in his sorrow. We do not yet known the reason for his being childless, that is why we have come to you. Now after seeing you, we are fully confident that our sorrow will go away, because every task is accomplished by just seeing great men, so please tell us by which method our Maharaj can have a son. O Rishivar! This will be a great favor of yours on us and the people of our kingdom.’

Hearing such a sad prayer, sage Lomash closed his eyes and started thinking about the previous births of the king. After a few moments, he said – ‘O noble people! This king was very unruly in his previous birth and used to do bad deeds. In that birth, he used to roam from one village to another.

Once it was the Ekadashi day of the Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month, he was hungry for two days. In the afternoon, he went to a water body to drink water. At that place, a pregnant cow was drinking water. The king drove her away as she was thirsty and started drinking water himself.

O great men! That is why the king must suffer this pain.

The result of staying hungry on the day of Ekadashi is that in this birth he is a king and due to driving away the thirsty cow from the water body, he is childless.’

Knowing this, all the members of the assembly started praying – ‘O great sage! It is written in the scriptures that sins are destroyed by virtue, so kindly tell us about a remedy by which the sins of our king’s previous life are destroyed, and he gets a son.’

Hearing the prayers of the members of the assembly, Lomash Muni said – ‘O noble men! If all of you observe the fast and stay awake the night of Putrada Ekadashi on the Shukla Paksha of Shravan month and give the fruits of that fast to the king, then your king will have a son. All the troubles of the king will be destroyed.’

Knowing this remedy, everyone including the minister thanked the Maharshi a million times and returned to their kingdom after taking his blessings. Thereafter, as per the orders of Lomash Rishi, they observed the fast of Putrada Ekadashi as prescribed and gave its fruits to the king on Dwadashi.

Due to this virtue’s effect, the queen conceived and after nine months gave birth to a brilliant son.

O son of Pandu! That is why this Ekadashi was named Putrada. A person who desires a son should observe the Ekadashi fast of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Shravan as prescribed. Due to the effect of this fast, one gets happiness in this world and heaven in the next world.”

🙏 Story Summary 🙏

While committing sinful acts, a person does not think about what he is doing, but it is known from the scriptures that even the smallest sin of a person forces him to suffer terrible sorrows, hence a person should be afraid of committing sinful acts, because this demon called sin does not leave him from birth to birth. A person should have complete faith and devotion towards God while following the vow of truth and should always remember that there is no bigger sin in the world than hurting someone’s heart.
