🌼Karwa Chauth Mata ki Katha (Story of Karwa Chauth Mata)🌼
Once upon a time, a moneylender had seven sons and a daughter. The daughter was married and had come to her maternal home. The daughter’s name was Karva. All the seven brothers loved their only sister Karva very deeply. They took full care of their sister. When Karva had come to her maternal home, one evening everyone sat down to eat. It was the Chaturthi Tithi of Kartik month, Krishna Paksha. Hence, all the daughters-in-law of the moneylender and the moneylender’s daughter Karva had kept the fast of Chaturthi/Chauth.
When all the sons of the moneylender sat down to eat, they asked their sister to eat. When the brothers called her to eat, the sister said – Brother, the moon has not come yet. When the moon comes, I will eat only after completing the fast by offering Arghya to the moon. When Karva said this, the brothers got worried that the sister was hungry and the moon had not come yet.
In such a situation, the youngest brother among the seven brothers went to a distant tree and lit a fire in it and put a sieve in it and came to his sister and said to her – Look sister, the moon has come. Now eat your food. The sister also said to her sisters-in-law – Bhabhi, look the moon has come. Now you people also complete your fast by offering Arghya and eat your food. The sisters-in-law, after listening to sister-in-law Karva, said – Sister-in-law, this moon has come for you. Not ours.
After saying this, this Karva sits alone to eat and as soon as she takes the first bite of food in her mouth, she sneezes. When she takes the second bite, a hair comes in it. After this, as soon as she is about to take the third bite of food, at that very moment she gets an invitation from her in-laws that her husband’s health is very bad.
She should come to her in-laws’ house soon to see her husband. After this, her sister-in-law tells her the truth that this happened to her because she had broken the fast of Karva Chauth. Her brothers lit a fire and lied that the moon had come out and she believed it to be true and broke her fast. This is why her husband fell ill. After knowing the truth, Karva goes to her in-laws’ house and vows that she will not let anything happen to her husband.
Unfortunately, when Karva reaches her in-laws’ house, her husband has died. After her husband’s death, Karva is unable to bear her grief and tells everyone that she will not let her husband’s last rites be performed. She cannot stay away from her husband. She will bring back her husband’s life with the power of being a devoted wife and chastity. Hearing these words of Karva, everyone starts calling her mad and takes Karva’s husband to the crematorium for last rites.
Karva also goes to the crematorium in her stubbornness and separation from her husband and there she refuses to burn her husband’s pyre. On Karva’s repeated insistence, all the family members agree with Karva and do not perform the last rites of Karva’s husband. Everyone goes home. Karva starts living in a hut far away with her dead husband and starts worshipping God and fasting to bring her husband back to life. One year passes.
Karva waits for the same day when she broke the Chaturthi fast at her maternal home. After one year, when the same fourth day (Chaturthi) of Kartik month comes again, Karva keeps the Nirjala Karva Chauth fast for her husband’s life. To revive her husband, Karva prays to Maa Jagdamba to bring back her husband’s life. Give me back my Suhaag.
When this fast of Karva is about to end, the mother becomes pleased with her fast and tells her that if you want to get your husband’s life back, then go to your youngest sister-in-law. Only she can bring back your husband’s life because the reason for Karva breaking her fast was her youngest brother. He had lit a fire on the tree and lied to his sister that the moon has come.
So, Karva goes to her youngest sister-in-law and holding her feet, asks her to get her husband back. On being asked repeatedly, Karva’s sister-in-law cuts her little finger and extracts blood nectar from it and puts it in Karva’s husband’s mouth.
On doing so, Karva’s husband is revived saying “Jai Ganesh, Jai Gauri, Jai Ganesh, Jai Gauri”. Thus, by the grace of God, Karva’s husband comes back. Then Karva prays to Maa Gauri that O Maa Gauri, just as you made this Karva a married woman again today and blessed her to be a married woman forever, in the same way, O Maa! May all women get the blessing of being a married woman.
