💐Significance Of Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra 💐

The Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra is very important in Hindu mythology and culture. As the monarch of the cosmos and a manifestation of Lord Krishna, it is dedicated to Lord Jagannath. The festival commemorates the journey of Devi Subhadra, Lord Jagannath, and Lord Balabhadra from their major temple, the Jagannath Temple, to the Gundicha Temple.

The spectacle of the deities being paraded on specially constructed chariots called as Raths is witnessed by thousands of devotees. Drawing the chariots during the Rath Yatra is believed to provide benefits and atone for sins. The ceremony encourages devotion, unity, and spirituality among the faithful.

🍀Rituals and Procession of Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra :🍀

The Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra involves various rituals and a grand procession. Here are the key steps in the celebration:

Chariot Construction: Before the festival, skilled crafters painstakingly adorn the wooden chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra.

Chhera Pahanra: On the day of the Rath Yatra, Gajapati Maharaja, the King of Puri, offers prayers and cleans the chariots with a golden broom. The king’s weak devotion to Lord Jagannath is symbolized by this tradition.

Pulling the Chariots: Devotees gather in large numbers to pull the chariots on ropes. Pulling the chariots is considered a mark of honor and commitment. The distance between the Jagannath Temple and the Gundicha Temple, where the chariots are pulled, is roughly three kilometers.

Stay at Gundicha Temple: Devi Subhadra, Lord Jagannath, and Lord Balabhadra spend eight days at the Gundicha Temple after arriving. Devotees visit the temple to offer prayers and ask for blessings.

Bahuda Yatra: On the eighth day, known as the Bahuda Yatra, the gods make their way back to the Jagannath Temple. When the chariots are pulled back to their starting point, the Rath Yatra celebration is over.

🍀About the three types of chariots:🍀

The chariots of the Rath Yatra are not only grand in size but also rich in symbolism and tradition. Each chariot is carefully crafted every year, following age-old traditions that have been passed down through generations. Let’s take a closer look at these three magnificent chariots:

Nandighosa (Lord Jagannath’s Chariot): The biggest and most exquisite of the three is Lord Jagannath’s chariot, Nandighosa. This chariot is around 45 feet tall and features 16 wheels, each about 7 feet in diameter. Lord Vishnu is usually connected with the colors yellow and vivid red, which are used to paint the chariot.

Months in advance, a large number of talented carpenters and artisans start constructing the Nandighosa. Each piece is expertly and carefully constructed using wood from certain trees.

Taladhwaj (Balabhadra’s Chariot): Lord Balabhadra’s chariot, the Taladhwaj, is 14 wheels and around 44 feet high, making it marginally smaller than the Nandighosha. The primary colors used to decorate the chariot are red and green, which stand for bravery and fertility.

Similar to the Nandighosha, the Taladhwaj’s construction starts long in advance. Each item is expertly carved, and the wood comes from unique woods. Every step of its building involves ceremonies and rituals. A stunning visual appeal is produced by the red and green canopy composed of layers of fabric.

Darpadalan (Subhadra’s Chariot): Goddess Subhadra’s chariot is called the Darpadalan, or Devdalan. It is the smallest of the three, with 12 wheels that are about 7 feet in diameter and a height of around 43 feet. Red and black, which stand for protection and strength, are the main colors used to decorate the chariot.

The Darpadalan symbolizes Goddess Subhadra’s protective qualities. The color red represents her vitality and vigor, while the color black represents her ability to repel evil. She is portrayed in the chariot as a nurturer and protector.
