🍀What is Raksha Bandhan?🍀

In Sanskrit, the word “Raksha Bandhan” means “protection.” While the celebration is linked to various customs in various parts of India, they are all centered around the tying of a thread. In exchange for their brother’s pledge to protect her, sisters tie a thread around his wrist and pray for their health and prosperity. After the Rakhi is knotted, the brother gives the sister a gift.

Raksha Bandhan is a celebration that has been observed since ancient times. The earliest mentions of Rakhi can be found in tales involving Alexander the Great and numerous Hindu texts that emphasize the holiday’s deep cultural importance.

In terms of Indian mythology, we may observe how close friends Krishna and Draupadi were in Mahabharat. It is believed that after Krishna hurt his finger during the fight, Draupadi tore a piece of her sari to treat his wound. Krishna pledges to return her generosity, which began when he gave her clothing and shielded her from the Kauravas when they undressed her.

It is also believed that before Krishna departed for the big fight, she gave him a Rakhi. Additionally, it is reported that Kunti, the Pandavas’ mother, blessed and protected her grandson Abhimanyu by tying a Rakhi around his neck before he entered the war.

Raksha Bandhan is celebrated by the Koli community in Maharashtra as Narali Pournima, the festival of coconuts, during which participants present coconuts to Lord Varuna, the Hindu God of the Sea, to win his blessings. As brothers and sisters rejoice on Raksha Bandhan.

In Marwari and Rajasthani communities, a “Lumba Rakhi” is fastened to the brother’s wife’s bracelet. This is carried out because it is thought that the wife, who is the brother’s partner, completes the rite while she is not present. She bears additional responsibility for the sister’s welfare.

On Rakhi, kite flying is a popular activity. Married girls visit their mother’s house in several parts of North India, or some brothers bring sweets to visit their married sisters.

In Nepal, a sacred thread ritual is held to commemorate Rakhi, which is also known as Janai Purnima or Rishitarpani. In some regions of Nepal, girls and women tie the rakhi around their brothers’ wrists while Hindu males alter the thread they wear around their chests (janai).

Rakhi Purnima and Gamha Purnima are the names given to Raksha Bandhan in Odisha. Gamha Purnima is celebrated by Odisha farmers who attach rakhis to their animals on the day that coincides with Lord Balabhadra’s birthday.
