Jayanti comes from the Sanskrit terms Jaya and Anta, which signify “end” and “victory” (in the sense of the one who prevails in the end). Jayanti is Jayanta’s feminine counterpart. Satyamev Jayate highlights the essence of truth in the Mundaka Upanish poem. Jayte Sat Evem. Just truth (sat) wins (jayate). On their day, they worship the one who triumphs over all obstacles. Since Hanuman was with Sat (Lord Ramachandra), he helped his master, Lord Ramachandra, defeat the evil force Ravana in a horrific conflict. Hanuman came out on top. Om Tat Sat is how the Bhagvat Gita refers to the Absolute Lord. He is the truth; he who follows the road of right transcendence wins. Consequently, on Lord Hanuman’s Jayanti, we worship him.

It is thought that Lord Hanuman was born during the period of Moolam Nakshatram, which occurred during Margashirsha Amavasya for most of the years. Moolam Nakshatram and Margashirsha Amavasya fall on the same day. When Margashirsha Amavasya falls on a day other than Moolam Nakshatram, the Amavasya day is chosen to establish the festival date. Since it is thought that Lord Hanuman was born at sunrise, spiritual talks are held in the temples, beginning at dawn and ending after sunrise. On this day, devotees take an early bath after waking up. After that, they light a diya in front of Lord Hanuman’s idol and make prayers. The idol is offered fruits and sindoor. After prasad, devotees break their fast in the evening. They maintain their fast throughout the day.

While Vijay Abhinandan Mahotsav is observed on one of Pawanputra Hanuman Ji’s birthanniversaries, his birth anniversary is celebrated on the other. Hindu holy texts state that on Tuesday, the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of the Kartik month, Sankatmochan Hanuman ji was born in Aries ascendant.
In the month of Chaitra, another Hanuman Jayanti is observed concurrently. This has a mythological backstory. In that legend, Hanuman Ji was born with extraordinary powers. When Hanuman Ji was hungry as a child, he used to run to eat the sun because he thought it was fruit. As he got closer, he attempted to devour the sun, which caused darkness to descend across the whole planet. Upon learning of this, Indradev struck Hanuman Ji with his thunderbolt, preventing him from consuming the sun, which caused Hanuman Ji to pass out.
When his father, Pawandev, learned of this, he grew enraged and shut off all cosmic air, which caused a commotion on Earth because there was no more air. Following this, Brahma Ji granted Hanuman Ji life and soothed Pawandev’s rage. It is thought that on the full moon day of Chaitra month, Hanuman Ji was given a fresh lease on life. For this reason, Hanuman Jayanti is observed annually on the full moon day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Chaitra.
