What is Apara Ekadashi?

Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Jyeshtha is known as Apara Ekadashi. Like all Ekadashis, Apara Ekadashi is also dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is believed that by observing the Apara Ekadashi fast, all the sins of a person are washed away. This Ekadashi is also popular by the name of Achala ekadashi and gives divine and auspicious results.

The word ‘Apar’ means ‘unlimited’ in Hindi, because by observing this fast, a person also gets unlimited wealth. For this reason, this ekadashi is called ‘Apara Ekadashi’. Another meaning of this Ekadashi is that it gives unlimited benefits to its worshippers. The importance of Apara Ekadashi is explained in ‘Brahma Purana’. Apara Ekadashi is celebrated with full commitment throughout the country. It is known by different names in different regions of India. In the states of Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and Haryana, Apara Ekadashi is celebrated as ‘Bhadrakali Ekadashi’, and worshiping Goddess Bhadra Kali on this day is considered auspicious. In Orissa, it is known as ‘Jalkrida Ekadashi’ and is celebrated in honor of Lord Jagannath.
