According to the Hindu calendar, married ladies celebrate Karwa Chauth on the fourth day of the full moon in the month of Kartik. Married Hindu women fast on this day, without eating or drinking anything after sunrise for the entire day. This practice is known as “nirjala vrat.” They observe this custom in hopes of their husbands’ long life, prosperity, and safety. When women break their fast, they use a sieve to look through at their husbands’ faces and the moon.

Another name for Karwa Chauth is Karak Chaturthi. The word Chauth signifies the fourth day, whereas Karwa refers to earthen pots. The idea behind celebrating this day is to imitate Goddess Parvati, who fasted in order to win Lord Shiva’s hand in marriage. Married ladies observe this fast in order to secure the health of their spouses and a long-lasting union. The family is also said to benefit from good fortune and wealth during the fast.
The northern regions of India, which include Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan, are major celebrators of the one-day event. Hindu married ladies offer prayers to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Karwa Mata in hopes that their husbands may live long lives.

Karwa – Karwa is considered to be the symbol of Ganapati. It is said that the spout of Karwa is considered to be the trunk of Ganesha. Performing Puja by filling water in Karwa and offering Arghya to the moon fulfils auspicious wishes.
Lamp – On the day of Karwa Chauth fast, women keep a lamp in a sieve and look at the moon and then at their husband’s face. According to the scriptures, lighting a lamp removes negativity and increases concentration.
Brass skein – A brass skein is inserted into the spout of Karwa. It is believed that this skein shows power. According to the story, a crocodile had caught hold of Karwa’s husband’s leg, at that time she tied the crocodile with these skeins with her power and reached Yamraj. At that time Chitragupta was looking at the account of Karwa Mata’s life. Then Karwa separated the context of her husband from the pages of Chitragupta with the skeins and prayed to Yamraj to protect her husband’s life.

Pregnant women- During pregnancy, the body of women undergoes many changes. Fasting during this time can be harmful to health. Pregnant women need a lot of nutrition, which cannot be fulfilled by fasting. Also, staying without water for the whole day can be harmful for both the baby and the mother.
Breastfeeding women- Breastfeeding women should also not fast. Because the mother needs the right amount of nutrition to keep the baby healthy, but fasting can cause lack of nutrition in the body, which can affect the health of the mother as well as the child.
Diabetes- Women who have diabetes should also not fast. Fasting does not keep the blood sugar level under control. This can cause problems for them. Too low a sugar level can also be dangerous.
Heart disease- Women who have any heart related problems should not keep the fast of Karva Chauth. Staying without food and water for the whole day causes the arteries to shrink, due to which the BP increases. This condition can prove fatal.
Physical weakness- Fasting is also not good for women who are underweight or have any deficiency disease like anemia.
