Hindus have an ancient tradition of worshipping snakes and serpents, denominated Naga Panchami. It is celebrated in every country where Hindus reside. It habitually occurs on the fifth day of the Shravana month, which covers July and August on the Gregorian calendar. According to Hindu culture, snakes and serpents’ dwell in the realms of the netherworld, which in Indian religions is known as the patala loka. The patala loka comprises seven regions, the lowest of which is called Naga-loka. Hindus worship the snakes for their belief that they endow blessings and prosperity upon families. The day is usually observed by leaving the serpent deities in milk, which are then venerated.

Every year we celebrate all the festivals according to the English calendar, but our Hindi calendar has many more festivals than the English calendar. One of them is the Nag Panchami festival, which comes in the month of Sawan. Which is celebrated on the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha of Sawan. On this day, worshipping the snake deity and bathing them is considered very important and beneficial. Every year, a big fair is held at a place in Kashi, Varanasi, to celebrate this festival. The name of that place is Nag Kuan. People from far and wide come to this fair called Nag Panchami on the fifth day of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Sawan.
It is believed that if one gets the darshan of Sarv Devta here, then all the snake defects are eliminated from that person’s horoscope. On the day of Nag Panchami, various types of games are also held in various villages and towns, in which wrestling is also organized. On this day, animals like cows, bulls, etc. are also taken to the river or pond and bathed and prepared; doing this is considered very auspicious.
